Richard "Dick" Furrer
Captain
 Jul 22, 2015

Richard "Dick" Furrer passed away at his home in San Mateo on July 22nd. He was 82 years old. Born April 14,1933, in San Mateo to Lou and Mary Furrer, Dick attended St. Catherine's Grammar School and Junipero Serra High School. He attended College of San Mateo until football season ended. He then enlisted in the Army where he was stationed in Okinawa. He learned to fly on the G-I Bill and wooed his bride by flying her to Carmel for a Coke.

Dick is survived by his children Mark (Gina), Noelle, Sally (Annette), Suzy, and Kristy (Reese dec.) and his beloved and adored grandchildren: Elise "Shug" Armanino (Joey), Kristy "BK" Engemann, Kevin "Larry" Crouch, Marie "Monrie" Crouch, Devin "Placerville Pete" Furrer, Lucas "Cool Hand Luke" Furrer, Anne "Curley" Crouch, Kieran "Spike" Engemann, Pilar "Little Person" Ortega and Brett "Hurricane Joe" Furrer. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Sue, brother Jack and son-in -law Reese.

Dick was proud of his career as an airline pilot, initially working for a regional airline and finished his career flying international routes.

Dick coached countless teams in many sports but his coaching passion was in track and field. In 1972 Dick coached his first track team at St. Matthew's Catholic school in San Mateo, winning the first of seven consecutive Spirit Festival Track Championships. He continued his passion for youth track by serving as Track Commissioner for the PPSL while coaching at St. Catherine's.

An incurable optimist, Dick rarely came across a problem he did not think he could solve or a group of kids who could not be champions. He took risks, tested the rules and enjoyed life. He always had a project in the works whether it was building a sailboat, restoring a '47 Mercury convertible, or racing a mini-stock car. He built the family cabin at Donner Lake fifty years ago. Dick was happiest at Donner surrounded by his grandchildren, making pancakes on the porch and barbequing hot dogs on the beach.

From his time in the skies, on the track, in the garage or at the cabin, Dick celebrated life. We will miss listening to his stories and sharing a cup of coffee.

Keep your wings level and true, Captain.

Funeral Mass will be at 4:30 pm, Wednesday July 29th, at St. Catherine's Church in Burlingame. Reception to follow.
